Surrounded by houses and apartments, the Portland (OR) Gun Club is celebrating their 100th anniversary. When club president Kelly Whitlock contacted us with this information, I had to pause for a moment and reflect on that. Considering all of the clubs I know of, both large and small, I don’t think I know of any club that has been in existence since 1913. What an amazing accomplishment.
When the club was built, of course they didn’t have to worry about neighbors. Today however, “community relations” has become key to Portland Gun Club’s continued existence. Whitlock said their secret is to “kill them with kindness”, in reference to the neighbors. Additionally, shooters are limited to target loads (7.5 through 9 size shot) and club members frequently monitor which type of bullets new shooters are using.
This could be an important case study for those clubs who have neighbor issues of their own. I encourage you to reach out and share your experiences (and support) with the folks in Portland. Keep up the good work Portland Gun Club and here’s to another 100 years of success!
