Sunday, July 22, 2012 was a fantastic day for shooters & attendees of the Save A Pair for Breast Cancer Awareness event at Pine Grove Sportsmen’s Association in Russell PA. Proceeds of $7,502.00 was presented to Kathy Purcell, CEO, Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh on August 1, 2012 with an additional donation to be made when remaining souvenir t-shirts are sold.
The Pittsburgh Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure serves 30 counties in western and central Pennsylvania. Through its year-round fundraising efforts, the Komen Pittsburgh Affiliate has raised more than $28 million to fund local breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment initiatives. Projects funded by the Affiliate include the Mammogram Voucher Program and portable mammography units.
The ladies free 22 rifle event produced 54 shooters, many being first time shooters. The ladies received a free PINK t-shirt along with an entry into a drawing for a Marlin 22 rifle with scope. The lady with the highest score would win a handcrafted lap quilt made by Martha Betts, Phyllis O’Neill, Priscilla Powley & Linda Spiridon. Runner-Up would receive a PINK Crickett 22 Rifle donated by Rick Brecht. Final results led to a shoot-off between Cindy Cable & Ashley Walton who tied at 38 points with Cindy as champion & Ashley as runner-up.
One hundred and twelve shooters took aim at 50 PINK singles targets each in the trap event open to everyone. Entries in the this event also received a free PINK or blue t-shirt, meal tickets & a ticket for the Marlin 22 rifle with scope drawing. During this event, shooters got a shot at a random green target bonus. If they broke that green target they received a box of ammunition compliments of Tall Tales Sporting Goods. A winner of this event was determined by a Beretta Challenge Shoot-Off. Two numbers were drawn when the last scores were posted. The shooters whose score ended in one of those two numbers were eligible for the shoot-off. The first round of shoot-offs began with 17 lucky shooters. Six shooters made it to the second round of shoot-offs with only two smashing all ten targets. The last standing were Kevin Sturzenbecker & Ray Lee. After another round of ten targets, two on each post, Ray Lee was the Challenge Shoot-Off winner of the Beretta 391 Sporting Clays Shotgun, provided by Etchen Guns of Ligonier PA with Kevin Sturzenbecker as runner-up winner of a PINK Crickett 22 rifle donated by Rick Brecht.
Entrants from both events were eligible for the drawing of the Marlin 22 rifle with scope, donated by Grizzly Gary Wertz of Grizzly Gary Outdoors. The lucky winner was Troby Russ of Russell PA. Other activities for the day were a Chinese Auction taking place in the PINK clubhouse. Eighty-five items with approximately $2,000 in value were donated & auctioned for $1 per chance. Lucky winners were drawn at day’s end. Souvenir boxed PINK White Flyer Targets were also available for a $5 donation with a $50 cash drawing going to Bob Faga.
A cash raffle had been ongoing since early spring with six $200 winners to be drawn at the end of the shoot with the remaining monies going to Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh. The six lucky winners were Tina Judge of Russell PA, Shawna Brandt of Warren PA, Ruth Russ of Russell PA, John McCool of Warren PA, Ken Sorenson of Scandia PA & Barb Carlson.
Approximately 1.3 million men & women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually. With our donation, we can help find a cure!
